Saturday Tutorial - Candle decorating with "Surfin'Pippin"

Hello fellow crafters!

Welcome to my very first tutorial here on Digital Delights!

I have been looking into candle decorating this week. It is a popular technique in the stamping world, but did you know you can do it with your digital images too? You sure can!!!

Here is this week's project:

For this project you will need:

- A pillar type candle, color of choice, but pale (the cheaper the better, scented ones dont work as well)
- A white napkin (has to be white)
- Wax paper
- A sheet of paper (or thin cardstock, but needs to be fed in your printer)
- Color pencils or markers
- Double sided sticky strip
- Heat gun (hair blower will not work)
- Scissors
Optional: Bling, Stickles, ribbon, etc...to decorate

Ready? Let's get started!

Take a plain regular white napkin...

Now split the layers so you get a single one. Do this very gently or it will tear...

Next step is to stick your single layer of napkin on your paper/thin cardstock with double sided tape (see the picture for placement) Make sure the napkin covers the tape or it will stick in your printer!

And then with your scissors, just trim off  the edges

Now take it to your printer, and select your favorite Digital Delight digi image :)
This time I am using "Surfin'Pippin" and also the "Aloha" from the "Summer Surfing Fun Sentiment Pack".

Fun part!!! We now get to color our images! Using coloring pencils or markers, apply your colors.
Keeping your paper/cardstock underneath will help you for this. If you are using markers, use a very light touch cause it WILL bleed a little, test in a scrap area. Also, do not be afraid to use bold and vibrant colors, because they will fade a little when we will apply them to the candle. If you are using colored images, simply skip this part! ;)

Now cut around your images. You do not need to be precise for this at all, just avoid pointy parts, keep it smooth. I found that cutting them with the paper underneath makes this step MUCH easier...

Lets do the heat magic trick... Take a piece of waxed paper that will be large enough to wrap around your candle and provide you with a good grip at the back. Place your napkin image on your candle, then wrap your wax paper all around, making sure it's smoot and snug around your candle.

Heat up your gun for a few seconds, then run it over your image. You will see your image turning glossy in seconds and the white of the napkin will disapear! This will happen in a matter of 2-3 seconds so keep the gun moving or you will melt the candle too much. Then you can peel-off the wax paper gently and your image is now embedded in your candle :)

I wanted to have "Aloha" scattered randomly around the rest of my candle, so I simply repeated the last step.

Aint it pretty??? You can leave it as is, or you can decorate it with bling, ribbon, glitter... as you wish!
I ran a line of Stickles at the bottom and added tiny blue gemstones on mine... and there you go: your very own customized candle!

I hope you will have fun with this technique and cant wait to see what you will come up with!
Happy crafting!

  1. Brilliant! Looks gorgeous - thank you for sharing. I was wondering if it is still possible to burn candles which have had images added in this way?

  2. Andrea: No problem in burning your candle, except your image will distort as the candle will burn, like any other design candle would do.

Glad you like it ladies, and I hope you will give it a try :)
